Year 9 Drama Students Experience Commedia dell'Arte

The Year 9 Drama students have been exploring the rich traditions of Commedia dell ‘Arte this term and the excitement is palpable! This classical Italian theatre form, known for its stock characters and improvisational style, has provided a fantastic opportunity for students to explore physicality, creativity, and improvisation techniques.

One of the highlights of this unit has been the use of handmade masks. These stock character masks have allowed students to fully embody the exaggerated characters typical of Commedia dell ‘Arte. From the mischievous Arlecchino to the pompous Il Dottore, each mask has brought a unique character to life, helping students to explore physicality through a prescribed role.

Commedia dell'Arte is known for its exaggerated movements and gestures, and students have been encouraged to use their whole bodies to convey their characters' emotions and intentions. This physical exploration has not only enhanced their improvised performances but also boosted their confidence in the drama space.

The Year 9 students are preparing to demonstrate their newfound skills in a short performance as a part of their assessment early next term, where they will create their own Lazzi/slapstick comedy for the class. We look forward to a blend of humour, creativity, and physical theatre, highlighting the hard work and dedication of our talented young actors.
