What can students do now to prepare themselves for the world of work?

This week, the Careers Education Team explored this question with every student in Year 10. The discussion was based on the 2025 Future of Jobs Report released by the World Economic Forum. This report brings together the perspectives of over 1,000 employers in 55 economies on the macro-trends influencing their talent acquisition and how they plan to respond to them.

As part of this study, firms were asked which core skills they consider to be the most valuable in the workplace. Interestingly, soft skills such as resilience, leadership and intellectual curiosity were identified more frequently than capabilities related to artificial intelligence and cybersecurity (as important as these are). This finding complements our strategic priorities here at AISHK, specifically our work around PROSPER norms in which we encourage positivity, relationship-building and the explicit teaching of resilience.

In the academic domain, the most important area of preparation centres on the development of intellectual curiosity and wellbeing. Students should be encouraged to try new things, read beyond their subjects and ask their teachers challenging questions. All of this will help to cultivate the intellectual curiosity needed for them to discover their future pathways.
