The Green Scene: Eco Updates You Can’t Miss

Despite having missed many days this term due to adverse weather, our Primary Environmental Leaders have been very busy.

♻️Recycle Update

Students have now passed on the responsibility of emptying the Early Childhood Recycling bins onto the recycling monitors in those classrooms. Primary EC members have been doing check-ins to make sure that the correct items are going into the correct bins.

We’ve noticed a bit of a decrease as of late in our recycling data, and we are hoping that it’s because we are starting to REDUCE the amount of waste we are consuming.

🌱Excursion

On Thursday 21 August our EC leaders were fortunate to be able to visit New Life Plastics Recycling Facility in Tuen Mun.

Here, students listened to a presentation on the different types of plastics that New Life Plastics recycles: PET and HDPE. They also learned about some products that can be made using the recycled materials. Here’s what some members of the EC had to say:

“I had no idea there were so many different types of plastics. I learned there are 7 types of plastic, but New Life Plastics only takes 2!”

It was so neat to see the big bags of plastic chips and the crushed bottles flying by on the machines.”

“I had no idea that we could make so many neat things out of recycled plastic!”

This was a great experience for the students to be able to see the next step of what happens to the plastics in the bin once it leaves the school.

🌏TASS (The Alliance for Sustainable Schools)

In Week 8 our TASS Ambassadors, Jessica Stocks and Erin Chan, participated in their first TASS meeting joining schools from across Asia, including Dubai, Singapore, and Hong Kong. At this meeting they discussed “Biodiversity in Schools”. The ambassadors learned about the biodiversity in other schools and how and why it’s important to improve the biodiversity in their own schools. They’ve taken away some good ideas and have been tasked with completing a biodiversity audit on campus.

Finally, on Monday 22 September the EC Leaders visited the Boardroom to witness Mrs. Dunstan sign our TASS charter. This charter is our compass and our promise to each other and to our students, to operate according to a set of guiding principles related to sustainability.

Keep an eye out for more information on this in the future.
