Senior Visual Arts Students Enrich Their Creative Journey

This term has been a vibrant one for our senior Visual Arts students, who embraced two unique experiences that deepened their artistic practice and broadened their understanding of the subject.

ArtExpress Zoom Session with the Art Gallery of NSW

On Friday, 13 March, Year 11 and Year 12 HSC Visual Arts students attended a virtual ArtExpress Zoom session with staff from the Art Gallery of New South Wales (AGNSW). ArtExpress is the annual exhibition showcasing top-achieving HSC Visual Arts major works from across NSW.

The session featured three past students, each of whom achieved over 90% for their body of work, sharing insights into their artmaking practice and offering practical advice for success. Two AGNSW curators also joined, providing valuable guidance on how works are selected for exhibition. Students gained tips on drawing inspiration from influential artists, shaping a clear message for their audience, and collaborating closely with teachers. The event was both informative and inspiring, giving students a glimpse into the professional art world. See photos of the Zoom session below.

Life Drawing with Artist Gail Deayton

Year 11 HSC and IB students also participated in an intensive life drawing studio experience with artist Gail Deayton at Hong Kong Art Tutoring. This invaluable workshop encouraged experimentation with a variety of drawing materials and techniques, resulting in a series of works that students can add to future portfolios — particularly relevant for IB students.

For HSC students, the experience provided a strong foundation for their Art History and Art Criticism studies, as life drawing has long underpinned Western art history. The workshop challenged students to take creative risks, extend their works, and even reimagine pieces they had previously considered unsuccessful. As part of the Creative Industries department’s yearly senior program, the session offered both technical skill-building and artistic confidence. See photos of the students working below.

Together, these experiences highlight the dedication and creativity of our senior Visual Arts students. Their willingness to learn, experiment, and engage with the wider art community continues to enrich our school’s artistic culture.
