On Thursday, August 21, our Year 2 students took part in a Walk for Water, inspired by the story The Water Princess by Susan Verde. The experience brought to life the challenges faced by millions around the world who walk long distances each day just to access clean water. Students attempted to replicate the daily journey of Gie Gie, a young girl who walks 7 kilometres—about the length of 70 football fields—to fetch water, often sacrificing her education in the process.
Students tried to imitate the journey walked by the young girl Gie Gie, journeys 7kms daily—roughly the length of 70 football fields—to collect water, often at the cost of her education.
This hands-on activity was part of our integrated Science and English units on water conservation. By physically experiencing the walk, students were able to build empathy and develop a deeper appreciation for water as a precious resource.
Miss Millington, Year 2 teacher, shared, “This was more than just a walk—it was a powerful learning moment. Our students reflected on how fortunate we are to have clean water at our fingertips, and how we can be more mindful in using it wisely. It’s been inspiring to see their compassion and curiosity grow through this experience.”
