Working with professional musicians, Secondary students received expert feedback on performing and presenting, this week. As part of their preparations for the Secondary Music Recital programme students were guided on effective rehearsal techniques and strategies for maintaining a positive performance mindset.

The Performing Arts Music Recital Programme offers students an opportunity to join valuable workshops before showcasing their solo and ensemble performances. A Recital Workshop was held on 31 March, with professional musicians from the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble and Baptist University as artists-in-residence.

The students said,

“What I would work on towards the final recital is articulation and projection. I want to project more while incorporating hand or body movements that help tell the story of the piece.”

“Nerves were definitely a big challenge. But if I made a mistake while performing, I tried to just continue playing. That helped me forget I was performing in front of people. It was just me and the music.”

“We talked about feeling nervous when performing. It’s important to focus on positive nervousness, not negative nervousness. I’ve always had the negative kind, so it was good to hear that being nervous isn’t actually a bad thing.”

“I really want to bring out the feelings of the piece. The one I performed yesterday is a piece I really like, so I practised it a lot.”

Joe Travers, Head of Performing Arts, said, "A curated selection of performances will be showcased during Secondary Assembly on 6 May. We look forward to presenting the recital concert next term."
