In the humid, moonlit hours of 17-18 October, a spirited team of AISHK staff, students, parents, and alumni took on one of Hong Kong’s most iconic endurance challenges, The Barclays Moontrekker 2025. This unique overnight trail race, set against the dramatic backdrop of Lantau Island, pushes participants to their physical and mental limits, with routes spanning over 20km, 30km, and 40km, including the summit of Lantau Peak, Hong Kong’s second-highest mountain.

"Our goal was simple yet formidable: to “beat the sun” and reach the finish line at Pui O Beach before dawn."  AISHK Secondary Teacher Sian Byrne

Ms Byrne tackled the 32km route. “It was nothing short of brutal at times,” she shared. “We ran in 29-degree heat—the warmest Moontrekker on record—75% humidity, and a punishing 1,540-meter climb to the summit. Running through the night—at an hour when the body craves rest, and the mind expects sleep—felt unnatural. Yet, we dug deep, pushed past every instinct, and kept moving. Along the winding trails and steep ascents, there were moments of quiet tranquility—where the trekking became almost meditative, and we were serenaded by musicians along the route, from bagpipes to violins and guitars, each one uplifting our spirits beneath the stillness of the night sky. It was quite an incredible experience.”

“Staff, students, and parents cheered each other on. Their support and spirit was uplifting - absolute warriors, everyone of them. And knowing we were all in it together, no matter what stage of the trail we were on, was both encouraging and deeply motivating. It reminded me that the strength of our community is just as powerful as the challenge itself.”

A massive shoutout goes to Senior Secondary student Luka Youl, who completed the Moontrekker 32km Solo race in an astonishing 3 hours and 56 minutes, placing 5th overall. Luka’s achievement is a testament to his strength and determination.

Pauline Dear, AISHK’s Admissions Director and Moontrekker legend, has completed the race an incredible seven times. Her dedication and endurance continue to inspire us.

More than just a race, Moontrekker is a movement. Since its inception in 2009, the event has raised over US$2.4 million for children’s education and environmental conservation.

To all the AISHK staff, students, parents, and alumni who took part—whether running, hiking or supporting— congratulations, you showed true heart and grit. When the AISHK community comes together, we can conquer mountains—literally.
