Students Visit Elderly Residents in Sham Shui Po

On 15 August, more than 20 AISHK students from Years 9 - 11 visited elderly residents in Sham Shui Po, volunteering their time and energy in support of the Life Commitment Charity Club (HKL3C).

Students and AISHK staff delivered care packages to elderly residents and spent time chatting with them in their homes.

Lisa Darby, Secondary Teacher, said, “The charity team were genuinely surprised and delighted by the number of students who volunteered. The residents were incredibly welcoming, and it was lovely to see the warmth of the interactions and the genuine connections students were able to make. It was also a great opportunity for students to see the impact of our Mufti Day donations.”

Rowina, a Year 9 student, shared, “I learned more about their daily lives and experiences. They were kind and welcoming and some shared wise philosophies about living life to the fullest. Everyone was very grateful for our support and this taught me the importance of community and how small acts of kindness can make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.”

“It was good delivering bags of necessities to elderly resident and spending time chatting with them. They [the residents] warmly shared their daily routine and interests with us, reminding me that companionship and care can be just as valuable as material support.”

Ethan, a Year 9 student, added, "The visit taught me to be grateful for the opportunities I have, how important the people around me are, and to take more time to cherish them. One moment that has stayed with me was visiting an elderly woman with hearing difficulties. We had to ring her doorbell five times before she could hear us answer. She shared that she had been waiting more than six months for a hearing aid and found it difficult to travel to Tsim Sha Tsui for specialist appointments. For many of us, the journey from Sham Shui Po to Tsim Sha Tsui is only a few train stops, but for someone with limited mobility, it can feel like a much longer and more challenging journey.”
