Year 9 Food Technology Excursion

On Thursday, 10 September, the Year 9 Food Technology class visited the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups (HKFYG) Jockey Club Organic Farm in Tai Lam Country Park. Established in 2010, the farm is the only one in Hong Kong to hold both a USDA and Hong Kong Organic Resource Centre (HKORC) certification. The farm cultivates seasonal organic fruits and vegetables, providing same day delivery to homes and businesses to ensure freshness. In alignment with the HKFYG’s goal as a non-profit organisation, the farm also offers related educational activities to support the physical and mental wellbeing of Hong Kong’s youth.
During our visit, we explored different areas of the farm, learned about how organic crops are grown, and participated in a variety of hands-on activities. We had the chance to observe farm produce, discover the processes involved in organic farming, and engage with the natural surroundings. One of the highlights of the day was taking part in a cooking activity, where we used fresh ingredients and learned how food can go directly from farm to table.
This excursion to the HKFYG Jockey Club Farm was one of the most valuable experiences that our Food Technology course has given us. The tour of the farm offered us insightful information into the running of the farm, while the farming activities allowed us to understand firsthand the process that goes into harvesting vegetables that we often take for granted. Finally, the cooking activity connected the farming to our course, giving us the opportunity to enjoy our fresh produce. Overall, the experience helped us venture outside of our comfort zone and was very eye-opening.
