Congratulations to Thomas on this outstanding achievement and best wishes as he progresses through the SHAPE selection process.
Thomas Breslin, Year 12, has been nominated for possible inclusion in SHAPE, a selection of outstanding projects in HSC Design and Technology, Industrial Technology and Textiles and Design. The exhibition will be held at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) from Monday 16 March to Saturday 11 April 2026.
His project presents an innovative packaging solution that reimagines the transport of bananas through sustainability and smart design. His system utilises agricultural waste from banana plants, including fibres from stems and leaves, to create biodegradable crates and cushioning materials. Engineered to hold approximately 9–13 small banana bunches, the packaging also includes custom separation sheets that protect the fruit during transit.
"By merging functionality with eco-conscious materials, this project offers a viable alternative to conventional packaging, appealing to banana distributors seeking to reduce waste and embrace greener logistics. It's a step toward circular agriculture, where waste becomes a resource and sustainability drives innovation," he said.
Congratulations to Thomas on this outstanding achievement and best wishes as he progresses through the SHAPE selection process.
