AISHK welcomed Professor Matthew Bailes, a leading astrophysicist and Shaw Prize Laureate, on Thursday, 6 November. Professor Bailes is Distinguished Professor of Astrophysics at Swinburne University of Technology and serves as Director of OzGrav (the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Gravitational Wave Discovery). In 2023, Professor Bailes received the prestigious Shaw Prize in Astronomy, alongside Professors Duncan Lorimer and Maura McLaughlin from the USA, for their groundbreaking work in astrophysics.

During his visit, Professor Bailes delivered an engaging address to Secondary students, bridging the students’ knowledge of the Solar System with an overview of his work with fast radio bursts and their relation to pulsars in the Universe.

The address was followed by three question and answer sessions in which smaller numbers of students had the opportunity to ask questions about the universe and research in astrophysics.
