Week 9 marks Arts Week, a vibrant celebration of creativity across the Secondary School, featuring a wide range of events, workshops, exhibitions and performances. One of the highlights of the week is an exciting Music Video Competition, led by the Arts Prefects in collaboration with a group of Year 10 students.

The competition challenges participants to produce a creative and sustainable music video that captures the energy, and an insight of A Night on Broadway using DIY props made primarily from school materials in the DT or Art rooms. The video should demonstrate strong storytelling, visual rhythm, and resourcefulness, but most importantly, be creative and have fun.

Brief

Format: Short-form music video from 1-5 minutes (can be part of a song)

Due Date: Week 8 Friday 12th of June

Time allocated: 6 weeks

Song List

All competing teams must either choose a song from the list below ONLY.

  • My Shot – Hamilton (5:33)

  • The Phantom of the Opera – The Phantom of the Opera (3:36)

  • You Can’t Stop the Beat – Hairspray (5:24)

  • Beauty and the Beast – Beauty and the Beast (3:47)

  • Defying Gravity – Wicked (edited versions permitted)

  • Dancing Queen – Mamma Mia (3:50)

Requirements: Choreography, pacing, and prop reveals should sync to the song’s structure (intro, verse, chorus, bridge, outro).

Sustainability Requirements

Sustainability is a core focus of the competition:

  • No online-bought materials or props

  • No newly purchased single-use plastics or non-recyclable materials

Students are strongly encouraged to use:

  • Scrap wood or acrylic from DT rooms

  • Recycled school materials such as cardboard, paper, fabric scraps and old posters

  • Borrowed or repurposed items (e.g. flashlights for spotlights or old costume jewellery)

All leftover materials must be returned to the school’s recycling or donation bins after the competition.

To support collaboration, teams may assign the following roles. These are all suggestions, you can merge roles, take on double roles or more.

  • Director (1) – Storyboard, shot list, sync to music

  • Prop makers (1–2) – Builds DIY props (if any), manages materials

  • Cinematographer (1) – Shoots video (phone/camera + tripod)

  • Editor (1) – Cuts footage to song beats

  • Actors (2–3) – Perform with or without props (can overlap with other roles)
