On Thursday 10 September, AISHK joined schools and communities across Australia in recognising R U OK? Day, a national day of action, that encouraged us to check in with the people around us and ask a simple but powerful question: "Are you OK?"

R U OK? Day was established to raise awareness of mental health and wellbeing and to remind us that meaningful conversations can make a real difference. While we may not always know what someone is going through, taking the time to connect, listen and show care helped strengthen relationships and support those who may have been struggling.

Throughout the day, our Primary students participated in a range of activities designed to promote kindness, connection and wellbeing. Students in Reception to Year 4 received a special R U OK? Day keychain to take home as a reminder of the importance of having a healthy breakfast and setting ourselves up for success throughout the day. Students in Years 5 and 6 created their own R U OK? Day badges, encouraging conversations about friendship and support.

During Pastoral Care sessions, students took part in activities focused on kindness and connection. Younger students created a craft image of holding hands, symbolising friendship and support, while older students wrote messages of kindness to friends, highlighting the positive impact that thoughtful words can have on others.

Students also engaged in role-play scenarios that helped them learn how to start a conversation with a friend who may have seemed sad or worried. These activities focused on recognising signs that someone may have been unhappy, asking "Are you OK?", listening with empathy, and knowing when to seek help from a trusted adult.

At AISHK, student wellbeing remained at the heart of everything we did. R U OK? Day provided a valuable opportunity to develop empathy, strengthen relationships and remind our students of the importance of looking out for one another. Together, we continued to build a caring community where every student felt connected.

A conversation could change a life.
