Congratulations to our Year 9 student for being named as one of the National Champions for Year 9 in the prestigious Australian History Competition!
The competition is designed to challenge students to demonstrate their historical understanding, critical thinking and analysis. The competition is rigorous, with questions that require not only factual knowledge but also the ability to interpret and analyse historical sources.
Reflecting on his achievement, our winner said, “When I found out I was the national champion, it was so exciting and fulfilling because last year and the year before, I came very close. So I feel this is an accomplishment.”
When asked about the most challenging aspect of the competition, he explained, “Source analysis. One question asked whether a source was neutral or impartial, which required reading into subtext and judgment. The questions were ambiguous, often requiring comparison between similar answers. Reasoning through the text and aligning answers helped me make informed judgments.”
How did the school support him in preparing for the competition? "Something that is emphasised a lot in history class is on source analysis. I'm going to infer details from a text or a source and use that to sort of complement your knowledge. I think that focus on source analysis and investigation was very beneficial in applying my knowledge in this competition.
Our winner's passion for history was evident as he added, “The most interesting part of studying history is that it's very intricate, with many facts and perspectives. It's open to interpretation, which makes it fascinating.”
Congratulations once again on this recognition!
