Silver Adventurous Journey, AYPHK

Over 3 days and 2 nights 10 students hiked with a 'purpose,' participating in the 2024 Silver Adventurous Journey, which is part of the HKAYP award (Hong Kong Award for Young People).

Here one group of student talk about their Adventurous Journey, which took place in term 4.

Group 1, including, Charmaine Wong, James Goh, Sophie Tang, Karen Choy, Emily Chang, and Valerie Dy.

Our purpose was to represent the local environment of Sai Kung by expressing our interpretations and experiences through a range of artistic mediums. We felt this to be a significant focus topic, as Hong Kong is a very urbanised and fast-paced city, where nature is valued as a source of relaxation.

Leading up to the final hike, we participated in training sessions where we learnt more about navigation, first aid, and packing our backpacks. We then organised our practice hikes, including meal planning, grocery shopping, and mapping our route. After multiple practice hikes, we were finally prepared to start our final journey.

It was an eventful three days, hiking through mountains, past beaches, into wetlands, and across giant manmade dams. Although tiring, we spend time with each other and enjoyed eating outdoors - despite the occasional crunch of sand. Our journey was made unforgettable by the infamous wild boar, who constantly bothered us, stealing all our food and ripping a tent. But we made some adjustments and learnt how to deal with the blunt wilderness of Hong Kong.

Once we had gathered our inspiration over the course of the hike, we were able to form our own creative depictions of the local environment in Sai Kung. We [the students] all agreed we ultimately enjoyed this experience and are currently striving to complete the other sections of the Silver HKAYP, and are interested in continuing to the Gold HKAYP. We would like to thank Ms Diana Lee and Ms Christina Carini who accompanied us throughout our hikes, as well as Nurse Esperanza Ciriaco who taught us basic first aid skills. We would also like to extend special gratitude to Dr Hill and Mr Owen who are both essential to making this program happen at AISHK.
