Week 4 Update – AISHK Primary
As we reach Week 4 of the term, we are filled with pride and gratitude for the incredible spirit shown by our students, staff, and families. Despite experiencing three days of extreme weather over the past few weeks, our community has responded with resilience, enthusiasm, and positivity. Fingers crossed that the weather alerts hold off for the remainder of the term!
This week, we were delighted to welcome Gwyneth Cheung as our new Primary Office Manager. Gwyneth will be working alongside Rowena Pasimio to ensure the smooth and efficient running of the Primary section, with a strong focus on quality communication. Please join us in warmly welcoming Gwyneth to the AISHK community.
Book Week Celebrations
Book Week has been a joyful celebration of stories, imagination, and connection. One of the highlights was the Teddy Bears Picnic, where many parents joined students for reading time in tents, on mats, and nestled into cushions. The benefits of adults reading to children are immeasurable. Personally, one of my fondest memories is snuggling up with a picture storybook with my children before bedtime.
One of my favourite Australian authors, Mem Fox, beautifully captures the magic of reading aloud:
“The fire of literacy is created by the emotional sparks between a child, a book, and the person reading. It isn’t achieved by the book alone, nor by the child alone, nor by the adult who’s reading aloud—it’s the relationship winding between all three, bringing them together in easy harmony.”
Throughout the week, we’ve seen joy on the faces of our students, whether curled up in a bean bag with a book, exploring spotlight-lit corners of the library, cheering during the Book World Cup, or delighting in seeing their friends and teachers dressed up. AISHK truly feels like a vibrant pocket of Australia in the heart of Hong Kong.
A heartfelt thank you to Mel Brown, our Teacher Librarian, and the Book Week Committee for their dedication in creating such a joyful and memorable week.
Positive Parenting – SchoolTV Highlight
This week, we’d like to draw your attention to the Positive Parenting section on SchoolTV.
Positive parenting focuses on creating a nurturing environment where children feel valued, respected, and supported to grow into their full potential. It emphasizes strong relationships and emotional wellbeing over control and punishment.
One key takeaway is the importance of encouraging independence. I’m reminded of a quote: “Once your child can do it for themselves, stop doing it for them.” Around campus, we’ve noticed some children still being carried into school or having their bags carried by adults. Let’s work together to foster independence in our youngest learners building a community that is resilient, confident, and collaborative.
Thank you to all our families for your ongoing support. Together, we are building a community where every child can grow, flourish, and feel a strong sense of belonging.
As always, if you need support, please don't hesitate to reach out to a staff member especially the Primary Executive. We are here to help and guide our community.
