As the Year 12 students receive feedback from the various assessment items they have completed over the past few weeks, the focus for the careers team is to interview students with their parents about potential future pathways. More information will be given in the coming weeks about where and when these interviews will be held.
Last Friday, we launched Careers Education for the Year 10 cohort. During Friday Activities, and some wellbeing lessons, students will be participating in the BECOME.ME program. It’s a fun, interactive way to teach young people the adaptive skills and curiosity they’ll need to explore, design and navigate the fast-changing world of work. BECOME will be integrated with our regular curriculum.
The program is not designed to direct them to particular occupations or force decisions, but to inspire them. They will:
Reflect on their unique and evolving strengths, interests and aspirations.
Openly and broadly explore the dynamic and exciting world of work, recognising and breaking free of gender and social stereotypes.
Come up with multiple possibilities for their future that excite them right now.
Design and implement experiments that allow them to test out and adapt those ideas.
Research demonstrates that providing the time, tools and space to think about careers in general while exploring widely and without pressure, helps students become more inspired learners today, as well as improving longer term academic and career outcomes.
Parents and guardians are the most significant influence on young people’s future aspirations. Your involvement in the BECOME program will help our students get more out of it. Here are some ways you can be involved:
1) Talk to them about the twists and turns of your own career.
2) Explore the BECOME.me student web app with them once they have access.
We are also excited to welcome guests who will talk and interact with the Year 10s regarding their career journey.
The Year 11 students will have an opportunity to ask any questions regarding university applications during the wellbeing lesson on the 29th of May. They have been sent a form to complete so no questions will be left unanswered.
German Swiss International School (GSIS) is hosting an online ‘Fireside Chat’ for parents on May 22nd at 8.00pm (HKT). Senior admissions leaders from three prestigious universities — Cornell University, Brown University, and the University of Pennsylvania, will attend.
In this candid and insightful conversation, the panel will bust common myths and dive deep into what really matters in the admissions process. This is a rare opportunity to hear directly from the insiders!
Moderated by Claire Wilkins, Head of University Guidance at GSIS, this event is designed to empower parents with the knowledge they need to support their child’s journey.
