10-Minute Missions: Year 6 Takes a First Step into Secondary
Last week Year 6 students met with Year 9 students for the new ’10-minute missions’ transition-to-secondary activity. In the auditorium, Year 6 students were guided by Year 9 through four unique challenges as part of the programme preparing them for secondary school. Students received a taste of Year 7 learning and made the acquaintance of older students, so helping them to create connections and know a few friendly faces for next year.
On the first table students were challenged to write the beginning of a short story in a creative mission - just a taste of Year7 English. For the Mathematics challenge they used circles and strings to calculate π, before measuring a route round Australia in the Geography mission. Finally, students built towers of card in a teamwork challenge.
The event was rounded off with an informal secondary Q&A session before returning to class.
Through these transition activities and the wider programme, we aim to provide meaningful opportunities for our Year 6 students to build confidence and ease any concerns they may have about the move to secondary school. Engaging with our secondary students and staff also helps foster connections and a stronger sense of belonging as they look ahead to their secondary years.
