Library Update | Term 1 Week 2

Warm greetings from the Library and a special welcome to new AISHK families,

This year, we are very pleased to welcome Mrs Mel Brown to the Library Team in her new role as Primary Teacher Librarian. As Teacher-Librarians, our role is to support and implement the vision of the AISHK school community through advocating and building effective library and information services and programs that contribute to the development of lifelong learners.

In her role, Mrs Brown will be teaching Reception-Year 6 students and, over the first two weeks, she has developed a wonderful rapport with the students in online lessons. Future lessons will focus on promoting the enjoyment of reading and developing information literacy skills such as using Oliver (the Library database), locating books in the Library, identifying keywords, responding to questions using keywords, online research and evaluating websites to name but a few.

The role of Head of Library and Information Services is multi-faceted and ranges from supporting student wellbeing, overseeing the running of the Library, teaching secondary students in curriculum areas, running study skills sessions with junior secondary and working with all students to develop their research and referencing skills as well as coordinating the Distance Education program and the Extended Essay IB program.

Secondary Textbooks

Over the holidays and well into last week, we successfully accessioned and covered over 1000 new textbooks and in total, we distributed 1,904 textbooks to secondary students last week. Despite our best efforts, we didn’t quite finish the Year 8 History texts in time. These are now ready for distribution. Please make an appointment with the library staff at library@aishk.edu.hk to collect your textbook when school resumes in Week 3. We have been in touch with students currently in quarantine or not in Hong Kong to share details on how to access resources.

Battle of the Books 2021-2022

The Battle of the Books continues in 2022 and we have a range of students in both Primary and Secondary participating. The students are reading 20 set books and in May, a team of 12 students will compete against other schools in Hong Kong. This will be held online. Whilst we are teaching and learning online, we will hold book chats and question sessions on Zoom. Students are asked to check their respective Google Classrooms regularly for updates.

Library Website and Instagram

Students can access resources and links via the AISHK Library Website once logged into their school google account. We also have an Instagram account and would love you to follow us @aishk_library

AISHK/Wheelers E-Books (Years 3-12)

Students in Years 3-12 may like to borrow e-books and audiobooks from https://aishk.wheelers.co/. Students log in with their school email and password to access the account.

Library Staff Update

A belated farewell and sincere thank you to Mrs Donna Bristow and Ms Kathy Thomas for their respective work in the library in recent years. On behalf of the AISHK school community, we wish you both well in your new endeavours.

Wishing you and your families a wonderful Chinese New Year holiday.
