Our Prep students have been very busy over the last few weeks, ending our Week 6 with a Book Week Parade. Over the week we have also had an opportunity to read with our Buddies which has been a really lovely experience. Thank you Buddies!
As we explore different picture books and identify the features that make up a story, we had an opportunity to vote on our favourite character from the books we have been studying. We are learning to respond to texts by identifying our favourite character in a story. Once we had voted we analysed the data to see which was the most popular and which was the least popular. We spent the morning in different classrooms completing the craft activities. It was a lot of fun working in different Prep classes!
Ask your child: Which was your favourite character? What did you have to do to make your character?
Our phonics focus for the next half of the term are the phonemes wh, ch, sh, th. We are learning that sometimes we use two letters to represent one sound. We can sometimes find these sounds at the beginning and end of words. When we combine this knowledge with our other phoneme knowledge, we can read and spell a range of 3, 4 and even 5 letter words correctly.
Ask your child if they notice any words with these new sounds in their environment. Have them practise sounding them out loud.
We have been looking at data and how to collect data through answering yes and no questions. This week we have been asking our students to practice their “hefting” skills by comparing different items that they can hold in their hands to identify which one is heavier and which one is lighter. We have been developing our language associated with measurement such as heavy, heavier, light, lighter.
Ask your child: Can you practice your hefting skills at home to see which two objects are heavier or lighter?
We are looking forward to showing you what we have been doing in our classrooms at our Student-Led Conference on Friday 3 August. We are excited to be sharing our learning with you.
