Year 4 Newsletter | Term 2 Week 4

We hope you enjoy reading the Year 4 newsletter. It has information about what we are learning in class, updates about what is going on at school and activity suggestions you can use at home.

In English, we have started our deep dive into What’s in a Sentence?by revising nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs. Throughout the term, Year 4 students will learn about clauses, connectives, noun groups, verb groups, prepositional phrases and a range of punctuation and experiment with them in their writing.

How can you support this at home?

  • Talk to your child about the cohesive devices explored at school (What’s in a Sentence?)
  • Ask your child to identify the parts they are learning about in the books they are reading.

We have been busy learning about representing fractions as decimals, using the terms ‘tenths’ and ‘hundredths’ and measuring things we find in and around the classroom. Year 4 students are learning to talk about their findings using mathematical terminology and reflect on the accuracy of their measuring skills.

How can you support this at home?

  • Encourage your child to measure things around the home in cm and mm using a ruler.
  • Play with numbers with your child. For example, draw a place value chart, switch numbers around to make the biggest number possible, and change decimal values.

As we wrap up our Science unit on forces, we have begun moving into our History unit, which students will explore over the rest of Term 2. This term, Year 4 students will learn about the colonisation of Australia, why colonisation happened, what life was like for the explorers and the impact of colonisation on the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We start by tuning into what students already know and what they are wondering about this topic.

How can you support this at home?

  • Ask your child to share what new knowledge they have gained about this History topic each week.
  • Ask questions to encourage deep thought about the topic. What have you learnt that is surprising? What are you curious to know more about?

Learning Support Update

Last week we farewelled Mrs Abbie Mullan from the LEC, who has been working with Year 4 this year. She has been a great asset in Year 4 and we wish her all the best on her next adventures. This week we welcome Ms Patty Lau to the LEC and Year 4 family. Ms Lau comes to us with lots of experience and we look forward to her supporting the learning happening in classes across Year 4.
