Year 4 Newsletter | Term 4 Week 10

Christmas is in the air!  In line with our writing for different contexts, all Year 4 classes have been doing some sort of written Christmas activity, once again, aware of the audience and the type of writing, vocabulary and sentence structure that would be appropriate.  Not to mention having a lot of fun and seasonal festivity along the way!

‘Plenty of Pikelets’ is our new unit.  This investigation builds on the money, giving change and budgeting studies we did a short time ago, and also includes using multiplication (to increase quantities of ingredients), graduated scales, mass, millilitres and litres (measuring ingredients).  This is super fun investigation, and might be a good hands-on experience for our Year 4 students to try out ‘Grandma’s Pikelets’ recipe (page 13 of the iMaths book) under adult supervision.

The biggest message for this fortnight is sustainability.  Students have learned a lot about the choices people make, bearing the environment in mind.  They have come up with many thoughtful comments, watched videos, considered the Aboriginal approach to sustainability and have participated in a number of activities to promote sustainability in our lives.  In Library earlier this term, they designed infographics and in many classes students have designed posters to inform others about this issue.  This has gone a long way towards our students becoming thinking, caring people who consider their environment.

As noted in the earlier email, swimming has been cancelled for the remainder of the year and instead we will have Sport on Tuesday 1 December.

 2020 Through My Eyes

As part of Miss Jean’s input into transitioning in and out of the classroom and Zoom lessons, students watched a slideshow and discussed their thoughts about 2020.  After a short period of time to think further and consider ideas, students planned a small project, sometimes individually, sometimes in pairs and other times with their Year 1 buddy.  It was fantastic to see the various ideas put forward and the creativity in showing their take on 2020.

All the best,
