Year “One”ders!
Last week we celebrated Chinese Day. Although we didn’t get to celebrate for the whole week like most years, the children still had a great time dressing up in their Chinese attire and doing a range of different activities during their Chinese lessons.
English
This week we have continued our work on characterisation but this time with Aaron Blabey’s book ‘Sunday Chutney’. The children have been busy examining the character Sunday Chutney by looking at her body language and facial expressions and how these features help us to learn more about the character.
Ask your child what Sunday Chutney thinks about boys.
Mathematics
This week in maths we have been busy revisiting all the strategies we have learnt this year to solve addition problems. We have used 100’s charts, number lines and various strategies to help us find the answers.
Ask your child what strategies they use to solve addition problems.
Geography
Last week all Year 1 were lucky enough to spend some time on the Green Roof on Level 9. As part of our Geography Unit this term on ‘Places and Spaces’, we looked at what natural, managed or constructed features we could identify, and later discussed the reasons they were located there. This week we have started to look at the uses and facilities found on the field and the undercover playground. We will brainstorm who uses the spaces, when they use them and what facilities they need – such as the Secondary students needing a basketball hoop so they can play basketball at lunchtime.
Ask your child what is their favourite part of the playground.
Park Visit: Parents – we need your help!
We are asking parents to help their child to visit their local park. Please take yourselves to a local park over the coming days. A sheet has been sent home today for students to fill in. We are asking for observations on how the park is being used, who is using it, what the weather is like, time of day and facilities provided (bins, seats, basketball courts). It is not intended as an onerous task, and is of course weather dependent. Students are very excited about the project, so please help them by making time to visit the park.
