Year 5 Newsletter – Term 2 Week 2

This term, in English we are inquiring into persuasive writing. We are learning how to use emotive words to enhance our writing to persuade. We will be reading and analysing our classmates’ persuasive texts and also viewing commercials to see how we can be persuaded through media.

We are learning about fractions, patterns and general rules, perimeter of rectangles and probability. The students will also be consolidating their understanding of these topics using the fun learning activities on Study ladder and Mathletics.

In Science this term, we will be exploring the diverse ways animals and plants adapt to their environments. Our focus will be on the structural, behavioural, and physiological adaptations.

In History this term, we are learning about the colonisation of Australia and why people chose to move here and why they were forced to relocate. The students will focus on the following inquiry questions:

What do we know about the lives of people in Australia’s colonial past and how do we know?

  • How did an Australian colony develop over time and why?
  • How did colonial settlement change the environment?
  • What were the noteworthy events and who were the significant people that shaped Australian colonies?

The students are enjoying the learning and have organised a Survival Kit to take with them when starting a new Colony on Van Diemen’s Land. Ask your sons and daughters what items they would take and why.
