Last weekend on Saturday on the 2nd of March, our school entered into the HKSDPSC Junior competition (year 7-9). This competition was hosted at Sha Tin College and welcomed over 20 local and international schools and 40 teams in total from around Hong Kong. Our debating team was comprised of six Year 7 students; Jessica Mckenzie, Chloe Loh, Aurora Aranez, Alton Qiu and Austin Chau. Scarlett Pahl, unfortunately, couldn’t make it to the debates on the day. Despite the limited preparation time, our team still managed to win one out of our four debates, covering topics as diverse as: Celebrating the rise of plus-sized models in fashion, Regretting the commercialisation of childhood in the developed world, and the banning of CRISPR gene editing.
Although we didn’t make it into the finals, coming up against some very experienced and older teams, it was a great learning experience for everyone. We will aim to improve our skills and continue participating in future competitions as competitive debating continues to grow at AISHK. Our attendance of this tournament would not have been possible without the organisation and support we received from Mr Caleb Mui and we would like to thank him again for attending this tournament with us and guiding us throughout the day.
