As we begin the year of the pig next week we all have great hopes for what the year ahead might hold for us. I am sure that we are all hoping for a year filled with successes; good health, increased wealth and much happiness. I am also fairly confident that none of us want a year of challenges or of disappointments and things which might not go as we liked, hoped or planned. However, the reality is that the year ahead will be a combination of successes and disappointments, the good and the bad, ups and downs. This is life and we need to learn to deal with what life throws our way.
As parents we often try to shield and protect our children from the disappointments, the negative experiences and any unhappiness which they might experience. None of us like to see our own children hurting or upset and many times we automatically leap to our children’s protection and defence. This might not always be the best thing for our children as they need to learn that life is full of ups and downs and they need to learn to cope with all that life throws their way. Sugar coating-life for our children is not in their best interests.
Please watch the following video as it cleverly explains that a normal life is full of fluctuations and encourages us to see life’s challenges as a necessary part of living a full life.
So, as we embark on the year ahead I hope that throughout this year there aren’t too many challenges ahead for you; but if there are, then you will learn from these experiences and that you and your children grow stronger, become more resilient, develop perspective and are better able to cope with the ups and downs of life.
