We are now two weeks into our final and certainly most exciting term for 2018. We have many important events coming up over the next eight weeks, the first of which will be our Cultural Tour of Beijing.
At the start of this week, students found out their bus groups and on Tuesday had the opportunity to meet with their group leaders. It was a chance for students to talk about things they are excited for but also to ask questions. We are sure that students will have more questions during the next few days and they have been encouraged to speak with their class or Chinese teacher if this is the case.
Food is often something that is asked about more than anything else and some students can become concerned that they won’t like the food they encounter in Beijing. We assure them that the food will be varied and delicious! In each restaurant we visit, there is always something that everyone will enjoy. Of course, we also encourage our students to be adventurous and try new things as we can guarantee they will discover several new favourite dishes! The daily breakfast buffet provided by our hotel also offers a wide selection of food to set us up each day. Students may also bring snacks with them in their suitcases such as cup noodles and muesli bars, which can be consumed in their rooms. We ask that all food brought to Beijing is nut free.
One of the highlights of our trip will be the visit to our sister school, Shi Jia Primary. It’s a wonderful opportunity to meet our pen-pals and experience lessons in their school. Students have been asked to bring a small gift (not exceeding $100HKD) to present to their pen-pal.
English
During our English lessons this term, students will be examining texts from different cultures. Through the concept of ‘values’ they will look closely at how the views of authors and characters are shaped by setting, culture and social views and draw conclusions about how these are reflected through narrative voice, authorial comment and more.
Last week we began examining texts related to Chinese history and culture which included ‘The Red Piano’.
