As in years gone by, Book Week (Week 6) is a highlight of the year. Mrs. Atkins has worked very hard to have new events ready for Book Week for our students. In the lead-up to this special week, during Library lessons, Mrs. Atkins has been reading the shortlisted Children’s Book Council Award books and Year 5 students have been rating attributes such as the blurb, the story line, the illustrations and how the text and illustrations relate to one another, giving each book a rating.
The week itself is themed “Find Your Treasure” but is in no way limited to pirates! There will be no formal Library sessions that week. On Monday, Year 5 will have a fun book quiz in the Library so all their knowledge and memory of their reading will be helpful for their team. On Friday 31 August, the boys and girls may dress up as their favourite book character or dress up in the theme. At 8:30am, there will be a parade on field and at 9am an assembly for Years 3-6.
In addition, on Friday, the Library is hosting a Book Fair in conjunction with Kidnapped Book Store in Sai Kung. All students will be given the opportunity to visit and purchase a book of their choice should they wish to do so. The books will range from $100-$300 and any purchase over $100 will receive a 10% discount to use on the day. Please discuss with your child your expectations in regard to book choice and the spending amount as appropriate.
The Book Fair will be open from 8am-3:30pm should you wish to come and have a browse too, we’d love to see you in the Library.
Mathematics in Year 5
Recently in Mathematics we have been putting our knowledge of large numbers, multiplication, angles and area to good use in our current Investigation, Twinkle, Twinkle. Students have to create a 6 pointed star, cover it in glitter and then estimate and calculate how many grains of glitter it takes to cover it.
Maths Problem Solving Day
On Monday the 27 of August at 8:20am, Year 5 will be participating in a Maths Problem Solving Day in the auditorium. The students will be grouped into House teams and will be required to work together to solve challenging maths problems. Some parent participation will be required during the event and we are seeking volunteers to check answers on the day. Please email your child’s teacher if you are available on this date. Thanks.
Naming of Clothing and Lost Property
May we remind you that all items that come to school or are worn to school, need to be clearly named and we thank those who check and continue to refresh nametags. Students often tell us they know what an article looks like, but we often find things when students are not around. Lost property may be in one of three places: the lost property cupboard outside of the Canteen, more valuable items at the Primary Office and occasionally something is handed into the Secondary Office on the 8th floor.
Looking forward to having some of you join us on 27 August.
