Year 1 News In Week 2!

27 April 2018 Brigitte McNamara Year 1 News 0

Welcome to Term 2! Year 1 has had a great start to the new term! Read on to find out what we’ve been up to and some of the things to come…

Literacy

This term we will be focusing on transformation by exploring the setting, characters and plot of various books. Across the term, Year One students will create texts inspired by the chosen literature by innovating on and recreating the plot, character or setting or by following the text patterning.

So far we have discovered:The setting describes when and where the story takes place.

The characters are the people, animals or objects that play important roles in the plot.

The plot is everything that happens in the story.

The first story we have explored is Imagine, written by Alison Lester. Year One students have loved exploring the different settings in this story by imagining they were in the jungle, under the sea, on an ice cap, visiting a farm, staying safe around dinosaurs, on safari and exploring the Australian
outback.

Next week, we will start to use our comprehension skills to answer here, head and heart questions:
Here: I can find the answer on the page.
Head: I can find the answer by thinking.
Heart: I can find the answer by considering feelings and emotions.

Camera Words

For the first half of this term we will be learning the camera words:

her, about, down, out, there, his

and the phoneme /i/, for words with the spelling

i, igh, ie, & i_e.

You can help by finding these sounds in books your children read at home and help them spell them if they have not yet mastered them.

Maths and Digital Literacies

During Term Two, Year One students will be exploring the concepts of Place Value, Addition, Subtraction, Fractions, Data, Time, Length and 3D Shapes.

Students have already started exploring why we collect data, how we record it and some of the ways we can display and use the information. They have been asking questions, tallying results and graphing the information gathered. Mr Ohlson has started showing us how we can do all of this using technology.

Integrated Studies

This term, students will be exploring Living Things and how they meet their needs in different environments.

As part of this unit, Year One will be going on an excursion to the Flower Market in Mong Kok.

Keep your eye out for an e-mail with more information.
