Basketball Dreams at ACAMIS Beijing

Last weekend, in frosty conditions, I had the absolute pleasure of accompanying 16 students to Beijing for the first ACAMIS Tournament of 2018.  The students’ behaviour and endeavour were a credit to themselves and AISHK.  Under the excellent guidance of Mr Lee Pilgrim and Mr Alasdair Ong the teams gave their all, showing perseverance and a positive attitude.  In addition to their core business – basketball, new friendships were made through the cultural homestay experience, and valuable lessons were learnt.

Congratulations and well done to all those who attended.

Girls Report

On the first of February, 16 students and 3 coaches see off to Dulwich Beijing.  The girls team consisted of Phoebe Coogans, Prudence Steadson, Janice Leung, Edwina Sze, Stella Ng, Kelly Choy, Emily Kwok and Kylie Lau. After a long morning of travelling, the girls persevered in the two games that were to be played that day, which unfortunately resulted in a disappointing outcome.  However, they were ready to face the next couple of days with positivity and determination.  By the end of round robin, the girls faced a team that they have previously lost to and won 16-5, placing them in 5th place.  After a relatively successful weekend, the girls had gained valuable experiences, met many people from around the world and learned to play and communicate as one.  Thank you to the coaches and supervisors, Mr Ong, Mr Pilgrim and Mrs Simms for making this incredible tournament possible.

Boys Report

On Thursday 1 of February, 16 eager basketball players accompanied by Mrs Simms, Mr Ong and Mr Pilgrim landed in Beijing to compete in the red division of the ACAMIS basketball tournament. Despite losing the first three games of the tournament the U20 Boys team kept these games competitive and close. On the second day, the boys fought hard in all three games and were determined to get a win. As a result, we defeated the International School of Tianjin (IST) and received our well- deserved victory.

After playing five teams on the first two days, the AISHK boys team was placed 5th in the round robin. This subsequently led the boys to once again face IST on the third day. In our last game of the tournament, our opposition was overwhelmed by our determination resulting in a dominant 17pt win for us. This victory enabled the AISHK Boys team to be placed 5th overall. Congratulations to Nathan Lu who showed consistent domination and was selected in the All-Tournament team.

This tournament marked the last basketball game for five members of the Roo’s team, including Zac Chu, Edmund Sze, Andrew Yick, Caleb Chow and Kevin Tong. We would like to thank Mr Pilgrim for his dedication throughout that time.
