Our overarching theme is Values. Students will learn how text is used as a means of conveying a message and that values and attitudes relate to the world outside. We will be discussing what values are and how it affects our behaviour. We (hopefully) have managed to look past ‘I value pizza’, ‘I value ice-cream’ and look at more sophisticated topics such as honesty, bravery, equality etc. Ask your child what values they think are most important to them and why. To get a deeper understanding of this concept we will be reading a Dr. Seuss book called The Lorax. Students will be analysing the characters the Once-ler and the Lorax and how their values have influenced their behaviour.
The students love the silly rhymes and quirky illustrations which are part of all the Dr Seuss books (they’re also great fun for adults to read). His characters and the wonderful way he had of rhyming has lead us to learn about various types of poetry. Students will be learning about limericks, haikus, couplets etc and creating some of their own.
The more that you read, the more that you know. The more that you’ll learn, the more places you’ll go – Dr Seuss.
One of our topics this term is chance. Students will be conducting chance experiments and then describe possible outcomes. Our other topics revolve around measurement; angles, mass, and capacity. Students will we will be looking at how each of these is measured and then comparing and ordering them.
We will be learning about how and why people choose to remember significant events of the past. We have started looking at the difference between a celebration and a commemoration. We have also done some exploratory research on various events around the world and how various events are celebrated differently. Ask your child which celebrations they have looked at and if they can tell you something about it.
This term we are going to be consolidating our coding skills by using the LEGO® Education WeDo kits. These kits introduce young students to robotics. Students will be able to build LEGO models featuring working motors and sensors; program their models; and explore a series of cross-curricular, theme-based activities while developing their skills in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics as well as language, literacy, and social studies. I’m sure you may have seen some of the photos on Instagram. (Our Instagram name is: y3aishk2017).
