Library News

A special welcome back to Term 3 from all of the Library Staff. This term is very significant for us as we celebrate Book Week in Week 5!

As mentioned previously, the theme this year is:

A reminder that on Friday 25 August-Reception-Year 6 students may dress as their favourite book character. On this day, there will be a parade around the field, an Early Childhood Assembly and also a Primary Assembly (Further details to come at a later date).

Rocket Reading Challenge

It is the time of year once again to begin our Rocket Reading Challenge.  This reading challenge will run for 5-6 weeks and will follow the same guidelines as 2016.

The aim of this challenge is to encourage the boys and girls to read. Children will be asked to record the number of minutes they read every night onto a record sheet. Your child can read a variety of books during the challenge, some may include: home readers, class project books, personal books on kindle or books from the library.  At the end of the challenge, the children will be awarded a certificate according to how many minutes they complete.  They must hand in their record sheet at the end of the challenge in order to receive their certificate. We ask that parents supervise the adding of the minutes read each week and sign the rocket completed as well as initial the books read.

Children need to record the title of the book they read.  They will receive small stationery prizes after different time goals have been met.  This challenge was an enormous success last year, please encourage your child to participate and help them to record their minutes and books daily.  We thank you in advance for your support.

Library Lessons

During this term, the library lessons will focus on reading and discussing the shortlisted books from The Children’s Book Council of Australia. In Early Childhood, we will focus on the Early Childhood Book of the Year category and in primary classes we will look at both the Early Childhood Book of the Year and the Picture Book of the Year categories. All students will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite book and we will wait in suspense to see who the actual winner is. All will be revealed during the assemblies in Week 5.

Photo Request

I’d love to collect some photos from you of your children reading in weird and wonderful places. Perhaps you happened to snap a great photo when you were on your recent holiday? With our theme being Escape to Everywhere this year, I can’t wait to see what photos we can gather. Please email me at  nicole_atkins@aishk.edu.hk
