On a very hot Tuesday this week, 13 excited girls ranging from Year 3 to Year 7 travelled to Kings Park to contest the playoffs for the ISSFHK Div 2 Championship. This tournament started in late March and after going through the six pool games undefeated and only conceding one goal, the girl’s confidence was high. However, they still had some nerves going into these games.
For the first semi-final, they were up against the Canadian International School (CDNIS) who we had played a few weeks previous. The girls started great and after some applied pressure the goals started to come especially in the 2nd half. The girls eventually won 6-0 and this placed them into the grand final against Christian Alliance International School (CAIS).
After an hour’s rest between the semi’s and the finals, the girls were ready to compete in the game that they had been working towards since the start of the season. They came up against an opposition that were very strong and ready for the challenge. Our girls never gave in despite the heat and the pressure. At half time AISHK were up 1-0 thanks to a great left footed goal by Georgina Durack. The team started the second half strongly and a goal was scored after some great leadup work from Georgina where she distributed the ball to Alice Harbottle on the left wing. Alice put a cross into the goal mouth for Amelie Gibson to tap the ball into the goal. This gave us a 2-0 lead. The girls continued their great teamwork throughout the second half but unfortunately conceded a goal with only two minutes to go. They held on with some strong defending to win the grand final 2-1. This meant that our U12 girls went through the season undefeated after eight games.
These girls have developed their skills and gamesmanship during this season. This wouldn’t have happened without the guidance of their coach, Miss Knight. Miss Knight has turned this group of girls into a very well drilled team that play some great football both as individuals and as a team. Thanks Miss Knight for coaching the girls this season.
Special mention to the students that will be moving onto the U14’s due to their age and have played their last game in this age group. Those students were Maia McGunnigle, Elle Christmas, Madi Baker, Charlize Taper, Georgiana Durack, Alison Or and Trisha Chan. The other students that were part of this squad included Amelie Gibson, Alice Harbottle, Hope Spiller, Katija Shirley, Eve Carroll, Chelsy Gleeson.
Well done girls and we look forward to seeing you playing again very soon in our upcoming tournaments.
