Things are certainly heating up as prepare for our international flight around the world on Tuesday 13 June and Wednesday 14 June.
All groups are working hard to prepare exciting musical items and dramatic performance pieces for your listening and viewing pleasure. The masks and puppetry made by our Year 3-6 students are constructed and ready to go.
We are excited to feature one of AISHK’s finest young musicians as a soloist in this year’s showcase. Year 12 student Garrick Tang is the principal cellist with the AISHK Orchestra. He has won numerous prizes with the Hong Kong Music Festival and has been awarded Licentiate Diplomas for both piano and cello. Garrick is also principal cellist with the Hong Kong Children’s Symphony Orchestra for the 2016-2017 season.
Garrick started learning the piano when he was four years old from his mother, and then picked up the cello when he was eight years of age. When asked why he chose to learn the cello, he replied, “Well, when I tried to play my older brother’s trumpet but I couldn’t make any sound out of it. My father suggested I learn the cello, so I did”. We are certainly glad he did, because Garrick has an exciting professional music career ahead of him.
Garrick will play the first movement of Mendelssohn’s brilliant second sonata for Cello and Piano in D Major, and it will be my pleasure to join him on the piano for this performance.
We hope you can join us at the Showcase for one of the evenings to enjoy Garrick’s exciting playing along with all of the wonderful talent on display by AISHK’s young artists.
