We were very privileged to have Leigh Hobbs visit AISHK on Monday 20 March. Leigh conducted workshops with all Primary students, visited both Reception classes in the library and signed all pre-visit book orders, we certainly kept him on his toes!
Leigh is the Australian Laureate author for 2016-2017. The Australian Children’s Laureate is an initiative developed by the Australian Children’s Literature Alliance (ACLA). The Laureate’s role is to promote the importance of reading, creativity and story in the lives of young Australians. The theme for Leigh’s two-year term as Australian Children’s Laureate is ‘to champion creative opportunities for children, and to highlight the essential role libraries play in nurturing our creative lives’. Leigh’s dedication to this role was evident in his sessions. The boys and girls drew a few of Leigh’s most well-known book characters including; Mr Chicken, Old Tom and Horrible Harriett.
Prior to Leigh’s visit, the children participated in a variety of activities. Each year level read an assortment of Leigh’s books. Some of the activities included; dramatising Leigh’s short novels, using rebus to rewrite text (replacing words with pictures/emojis on the library iPads), labelling the parts of Leigh’s books, expanding thinking through development of questioning techniques, partner reading and sharing ideas and summarising Leigh’s picture books.
We hope you enjoy seeing some photos taken on the day.
