HSC and IB Business classes visit HSBC

The Year 12 HSC and IB Business classes visited HSBC at the end of Term 4 at their offices in Causeway Bay.  The three hour event was hosted by Head of Digital, Andrew Eldon and Commercialisation Lead, Adriana Lica.  From start to finish the visit provided a wonderful insight into the workings of a large blue chip organisation and the many and varied challenges they face.  Some of the key challenges included:

  • How to successfully connect with your customers and make their personal journeys as unique and rewarding as possible
  • How quickly can HSBC upgrade their digital platform through a major overhaul of their IT infrastructure
  • Anticipating and understanding how to successfully market goods and services of the future

Andrew also outlined the wide variety of required skills and job opportunities that exist on the digital side of their business and in particular the huge demand for IT engineers.  Students finished the visit by breaking into three groups and participating in a “business model and ideation” exercise, which required groups to develop an online product or service and present their business model to those present.  It really tested our students’ creative and critical thinking and the results were very impressive. The visit was well received by all who attended and was yet another valuable insight into the varied and diverse work environments that exist post-secondary and tertiary education.
