Welcome BBQ Recap

What a buoyant and ‘bouncy’ Welcome BBQ we had last Friday evening. Thank you to all who attended and engaged in the event; it was a very enjoyable time. Even as the last gasp of air was folded out of the Links Moving Bouncy Castle, there were still conversations a-plenty around the field. The unseasonably warm evening made the lingering an easy and enjoyable inevitability.

Thank you to our sponsor Central Equity who presented the lucky draw prize to Mrs Naomi Moore with much excitement. Also we owe a big thank you to the AISHK Parent Association for their work in supporting the event. Their supply of able parents who worked on the BBQs, the drinks supply, and the ‘PA Greeting table’ were invaluable.  Thanks to Co President, Ms Lauren Mitchell for her enthusiastic introductory words to the audience. The work of the school support staff and Development Office was also invaluable in making it a smoothly run event.

Great music was in play with the short set by the secondary Rock Band, comprising Liam Walters, Ronan Fownes, Calum Stitt and Robert Winkler. Then, there were two great sets by Jordan Delfino’s band, which at several stages had a ‘mosh pit’ with ages ranging from 4 to 64 years.

Our plan for the evening was to deliberately focus on a welcome to the Year of the Rooster using traditional Chinese customs. This is something we have regularly done in our past Welcome BBQs, and it was great to re-kindle that ceremony.

So with traditional incense, bowing, cutting the suckling pig and a spectacular Lion Dance we welcomed in the new year. But we also had birthday cake and sang an AISHK Happy Birthday, led by school captains Dana Free and Brayden Lo, as this start of the school year also marked the 22nd birthday since the establishment of the school on January 26, 1995.

The BBQ was plentiful and the roast suckling pig was quickly consumed, the conversations were warm and convivial, and new friends and relationships were established. My congratulations go to all who made it such a welcome occasion.

The Secondary Parent Cocktail event, held last night, Thursday 23 February, was also a warm and convivial occasion. Thank you to all parents who attended as it was a great opportunity to connect with teachers and other parents. The new teachers to the secondary staff particularly appreciated the opportunity to meet the mums and dads of their students.

We look forward to seeing you at our range of parent-teacher conferences during the year, but should you need more immediate advice and feedback, please email or call the Secondary office for an appointment.

West, Howard
