Last weekend 23 students and three coaches travelled to Shekou to compete in the SDRC Middle School football cup. Over three days our boys and girls teams played against five schools from Shekou, Guangzhou and Hong Kong. The boy’s team quickly became the competition favourites with convincing victories, stellar individual performances and were undefeated as they entered the final. The girls went from strength to strength during the pool competition. After an unlucky loss in their first game the girls worked together and similarly became feared by the competition as they too progressed to the final.
The boy’s team continued with their winning form and defeated a solid AISG team 6-0 in the final taking their goal difference to +49 for the competition and only conceded one goal during their 7 game win streak. Some notable performances are that of Moses Chan (year 7) received the golden boot with a total of 10 goals closely followed by Darren Yu (Year 6) with 9 goals. Adam Wright and Noah Mansbridge were voted the MVP’s by the other teams and coaches for consistent performances during the competition. The boys are to be congratulated on their success with coaches from opposing teams acknowledging that they were the most successful and dominant team to play at SDRC in recent memory.
The girl’s team entered the final against an undefeated AISG team who were yet to concede any goals unperturbed and confident in their abilities. AISG struck first in the first half with a lucky goal which further motivated our team. As the game swung our way the girls pushed forward looking to equalise. Unfortunately despite the momentum being in our direction the girls were not able to get the goal they desperately needed and AISG went on to get two more goals in the closing stages. Prue Steadson was phenomenal during the tournament receiving the golden boot so too were the consistent performances of Rohana Utamchandani and Madison Christian.
The weekend would not have been as successful without the hard work of coaches Paul McGunnigle, manager Emma Knight and the organisation of Dwayne Brown and Niall Bennie.
Looking forward to more success next year.
