This week, students in Year 9, 10 and 11 were lucky enough to hear from guest speaker Pip Marlow, Managing Director of Microsoft Australia. Beginning her career at Microsoft more than 20 years ago in 1995, Pip Marlow is responsible for Microsoft’s overall business in Australia, ensuring the company meets the needs of customers and over 11,000 partners and independent software vendors that sell or build on the Microsoft platform.
In sharing her journey with students, Pip noted that neither she, or many of her colleagues for that matter, were seeking a career in IT when they first started out. This emphasised to students that there may be many and varied pathways to follow before finding a career that you are passionate about. Also, by being open to challenges and the unexpected, new opportunities arise.
Education is a foundation for success
Pip instilled the message to students that a formal education is a most powerful tool to position yourself for the future, that they have been born into an exciting era – allowing them to “dream big because your possibilities are endless”. She emphasized the value of studying Mathematics, at whatever ability level, all the way through school. All students need it for their future life and careers.
Perhaps the most important message from Pip was one that can be applied by all of us – the importance of being in a constant state of learning and development, so that we may not envisage an “end point” in what we can discover and achieve.
AISHK thanks Pip Marlow for her time and sharing her career and life insights with our Secondary students.
