Last Friday, AISHK participated in the ISSFHK Swimming Championships, held at Victoria Park Swimming Pool. This competition included the best swimmers from international schools across Hong Kong. Competition was tough and the races were very close. AISHK sent a team of 48 swimmers to compete.
The morning session was for the Under 12 and Under 14 year old students. We won a number of medals during this session with swimmers Jack Ware, Temana Short and Ella Fraser, winning a total of nine medals between themselves. Temana Short won the Under 14 Boys 50m and 100m Freestyle while coming second in the 200 Individual Medley. Temana's time of 25.93 seconds, in the 50m Freestyle, was also a new ISSFHK record, beating the previous record holder by 1 second. Temana also shaved 1.5 seconds off the 100m Freestyle record that was held by a former AISHK student, Nicholas Godbille. Jack Ware placed third in the Under 12 Boys 200m Freestyle, third in the 100m Backstroke and second in the 50m Backstroke. Ella Fraser won medals in the Under 14 Girls 50m and 100m Breaststroke where she placed third and second. Alistair Chan placed third in the Under 12 Boys 100m Freestyle, Ryan Phillips placed second in the Under 14 Boys 200m Freestyle and Angie Malcolm placed second in the Under 12 Girls 50m Freestyle. Our Under 12 Boys placed third in the 4x50m Freestyle Relay (Jack Ware, Alistair Chan, Finn Bennett, Darby Carroll) and Under 14 Boys (Temana Short, Ryan Phillips, Bill Thorley and Matthew Ohlson) secured silver in 4x50m Freestyle Relay.
Many of our younger swimmers swam personal best times while getting a taste of competition in a world class swimming pool.
The afternoon session saw our Under 16 and Under 20 aged swimmers take to the pool. Once again, competition was fierce with swimmers from other schools pushing our students to the limit. We took a number of new students to this competition and they all performed well, with many swimmers swimming in older age groups.
With our squad missing some key swimmers, we still managed to win a number of individual and team medals. Sam Thorley secured second place in the Under 16 Boys 50m Breaststroke in a time of 34.24s, Andrew Law came third in the Under 16 Boys 100m Freestyle, Ethan McGrath won bronze in the Under 20 Boys 200m Individual Medley and Kaitlyn Buffon won medals in the Girls Under 14 50m Freestyle and 50m Butterfly where she placed second and third respectively. Our Under 16 Boys secured third in both the 4x50m Medley Relay and 4x50m Freestyle Relay (Sam Thorley, Connor McGrath, Andrew Law, William and Henry Phillis) and the Under 20 Girls placed third in the 4x50m Medley Relay (Lauren Hunt, Ocean Hartnett, Gianetta Wong, Natalie Chu).
Points secured during the day placed AISHK second overall behind HKIS. Well done to all swimmers who participated in the ISSFHK Swimming Champs, it sure was a long day!
Good luck to Matthew Ohlson, Jack Ware, Sarah Law and Angie Malcolm who will represent Kowloon North at this weekend's Five Districts Swimming Competition to be held at Kowloon Park Swimming Pool.?
